I was really surprised with myself.

And wow Damned Lies. You really opened up a new idea there. I didn't know about Battle Royale. Thanks! Always cool to learn something new.

I am hoping you will enjoy the nest two books in the trilogy. :)Melissa (My World...in words and pages)https://www.blogger.com/profile/09621830513280969319noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4980755031135835705.post-67390566198675587592010-11-13T14:03:10.201-08:002010-11-13T14:03:10.201-08:00DL: I've obviously seen and heard a ton about ...DL: I've obviously seen and heard a ton about this book/series/author and I'm not sure why I've yet to break down and read them already. Hearing yet another fan's take is always a plus.

Thanks for your comment!Spinecrakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07022553096365061404noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4980755031135835705.post-16401493670935599792010-11-13T08:17:15.838-08:002010-11-13T08:17:15.838-08:00I loved the Hunger Games. Surprisingly, the fact that Katniss is annoyingly self-involved at times doesn't make it unreadable.

I also have always found it interesting because it's a cleaned up version of the Japanese novel Battle Royale (1999). Similiar in plot, an entire high school class is picked to go to an island where they are given weapons to fight. The winner is allowed to leave the island. The Hunger Games draws on a few elements of Battle Royale, but is its own story. The big difference is that Battle Royale was very violent, too much so for YA. Since it wasn't in first person, it could move amongst the characters better and give their backstories, but it lacked the immediacy of one character's experience. A comic and movie were made of it, both extremely violent.

On the plus side, the Hunger Games spawned two sequels, which supposedly are very different. I've been wanting to read the sequel, Catching Fire, for a while, but the 60 copies my library system has are ALWAYS out at a given time. A surprising popularity, but well worth it based on the first novel.Damned Lieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17912836390088345475noreply@blogger.com
