Review: Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs

Molly Harper
Paranormal Fiction
355 pages
Jane Jameson #1
Pocket Star

Synopsis:

Maybe it was the Shenanigans gift certificate that put her over the edge. When children's librarian and self-professed nice girl Jane Jameson is fired by her beastly boss and handed twenty-five dollars in potato skins instead of a severance check, she goes on a bender that's sure to become Half Moon Hollow legend. On her way home, she's mistaken for a deer, shot, and left for dead. And thanks to the mysterious stranger she met while chugging neon-colored cocktails, she wakes up with a decidedly unladylike thirst for blood.

Jane is now the latest recipient of a gift basket from the Newly Undead Welcoming Committee, and her life-after-lifestyle is taking some getting used to. Her recently deceased favorite aunt is now her ghostly roommate. She has to fake breathing and endure daytime hours to avoid coming out of the coffin to her family. She's forced to forgo her favorite down-home Southern cooking for bags of O negative. Her relationship with her sexy, mercurial vampire sire keeps running hot and cold. And if all that wasn't enough, it looks like someone in Half Moon Hollow is trying to frame her for a series of vampire murders. What's a nice undead girl to do?

Review:
I was so happy when I saw that Pocket After Dark was offering the first book in Molly Harper's Jane Jameson series. It's one of their free books this month.  I've being eyeballing this series for a while, and I'm pretty sure I was there the first day it was available.  {psst, it'll continue to be a free read until the end of the month} Ok, onto my thoughts.

Let me start off by saying I fell in love with the voice Harper gave her heroine, Jane.  Jane's humorous and appealing and strong-minded.  When we first meet Jane, she basically has a ho-hum existence, and that doesn't really change once she's turned vampire. Her life gets far more complicated and adventurous, but Harper didn't change Jane's real character, and for that I was grateful. She has a male best friend, a nosy family and her great aunt's ghost as a room-mate.   She's an easy character to enjoy being a part of.

If I had to sum the entire book up in one word, it would have to be "entertaining".  The storyline is relatively fast-paced, and doesn't offer up too many shocks, but is fun throughout.  The book is more about following Jane through her transformation, and getting to know her and the people in her life, than of a book with a villain and a mystery to solve.  Now, there is intrigue provided by the story-line, but it's extremely light. Basically, if upon starting the book you don't instantly enjoy Jane, my suggestion would be to move on, because Jane is the story.  Thankfully, I enjoyed Jane very much... I honestly think you will too.

Bottom Line:  A giggle worthy start to a fun new series of vampires with a sarcastic female voice.

  5. One of my favorite lines in any book is when Zeb is trying to remember what exactly happened when Jane 'came out' to him. When he ways he recalls scoring the winning touch down! LOL
